How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs in Your House

3. Cleaning and Heat Treatment

One of the most effective ways to eliminate bed bugs is through heat. These pests are highly susceptible to high temperatures, making heat treatment a powerful tool in eradicating them.

  • Wash Bedding and Clothing: Wash all bedding, curtains, and clothes in hot water (at least 60°C/140°F) and dry them on the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes. The heat will kill bed bugs and their eggs.
  • Steam Cleaning: Use a steam cleaner on your mattress, furniture, and carpets to kill bed bugs and their eggs hiding in seams and crevices. Make sure the steam temperature reaches at least 100°C (212°F).
  • Freezing: For items that can’t be washed or steamed, freezing is another option. Place the items in a sealed plastic bag and store them in a freezer at -18°C (0°F) for at least four days to kill bed bugs.
